How to Reduce Your Loan EMI: Prepayment, Balance Transfer, and More

A high EMI can strain your monthly budget. Several strategies can reduce your EMI or total interest burden.

Increase the down payment: The more you pay upfront, the smaller the loan principal. On a ₹50 lakh home loan, increasing your down payment by ₹5 lakhs reduces the EMI by approximately ₹4,000–5,000 per month (at 8% for 20 years).

Extend the tenure: Spreading payments over more months reduces each EMI, though it increases total interest. Use Tooler's EMI Calculator to find the tenure where EMI fits your budget while keeping total interest manageable.

Make prepayments: Paying extra toward the principal early in the loan tenure has an outsized effect. A ₹1 lakh prepayment in year 1 of a 20-year loan saves far more interest than the same prepayment in year 15. Even small, regular prepayments (₹2,000–5,000/month) can shave years off the loan.

Balance transfer: If interest rates have dropped since you took your loan, transferring the outstanding balance to another lender at a lower rate can reduce your EMI. Factor in processing fees (typically 0.5–1% of the outstanding amount) to ensure the savings outweigh the cost.

Negotiate with your existing lender: If your credit score has improved or market rates have fallen, your current lender may reduce your rate to retain you — avoiding the paperwork of a balance transfer. It never hurts to ask.
